Welcome to our High School! 2004-05 was our first year as a new small school at the San Diego High Education Complex and we're excited by the possibilities. As you will see browsing our site, we have some very talented students!
Our Early College High School MissionAll students in the Media, Visual and Performing Arts school will graduate prepared for college and careers with a focus on the Arts. This is through a unique Early College High School experience which allows for dual enrollment which is designed to create a seamless high school to community college pathway, providing students with rigorous, supportive, and career-focused opportunities. At the completion of the program, students will have satisfied their math requirements for an AA Degree and will have sufficient credits to graduate with such a degree within one year of high school graduation. Because MVAPA cannot independently offer many of the courses necessary to meet the industry standards in math and science, our partnership with SDCC will allow us to offer specific business courses, advanced elective courses, and tailored math and science courses. At the same time, the students will remain part of a small, supportive school that provides them with academic, counseling, and peer support necessary to excel. Aligning the high school curriculum with the college curriculum will allow students to experience college level work and to operate more independently, while continuing to receive the benefits of the high school safety net. In addition, by partnering with SDCC we will be better able to tap into industry sectors that have traditionally had stronger relationships at the community college level than with high schools. This is understandable since the colleges have many more eligible students, vocational/career coursework and certificate programs, and have traditionally linked with industry to help place their graduates. The number and diversity of high schools, the relatively small student populations, and the general maturation levels of high school students has militated against strong partnerships between industry and high schools on a broad scale. Therefore, we believe that the partnership between SDCC and MVAPA is a strategic alliance that will benefit our institutions, our students, and the local business community. The staff works collaboratively with each other and with parents/guardians to share information about their students to solve the MANY academic challenges and address ALL academic needs. If you are a prospective student or a parent of a student, and you are interested in any of the Arts this is the alternative to the San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts. Please remember that the Enrollment Options (OEO) Application (Solicitud de Opciones de Inscripción), with SDHS-Arts in the "List all schools..." box, must be completed and received by the Office of Enrollment Options during the priority application period ending March 15 of the student’s eighth grade school year. Since you are interested in the arts, but are unsure if you will be selected to enter SCPA, it is suggested that you include our high school with your arts interest in the OEO application. Otherwise, you are choosing your neighborhood high school as your other option. The Magnet School application is found at http://sandi.net/enrollmentoptions/oeoapplication.html.
School ProfileSan Diego High School is the oldest secondary institution in San Diego County. Founded over 100 years ago, San Diego High School is located on the edge of the re-emerging downtown Center City area. The population is ethnically and culturally diverse and comprised primarily of low to middle income families in a residential/business community. The Center City community includes San Diego City College, the downtown library, museums, parks, theatres, ballpark, businesses and a cultural center that are all easily accessible by walking, bus or trolley. We also have a very active and historic Athletic Department which includes some of the best athletes to come out of San Diego County. If you have fast internet access, here's a great video showing off our campus! Parents here is a good site for resolving many student issues, it's called Family Education.
